Concert Photography as a class is really quite short, only taking a few meetings before you and your small cohort of students are off to Boise-based music festival Treefort for up to five days of music. At the festival you are given a press pass and expected to shoot a number of shows. This essentially gives you the real concert photographer experience since, for all intents and purposes, you are one and you’re on assignment with all the benefits that come with having a press pass. You can go to any affiliated venue for free. Bring cameras where others cannot, barring some specific venues and artists who may have specific rules which you’ll know about ahead of time.
Taking photos in such a dynamic “target rich” environment is an ideal place for a photographer to not only create some amazing and varied work but to really show their skills at composition and working in various locations and lighting situations. I know that in my own experience, the confidence that I gained in my photography skyrocketed after doing that class, and I highly recommend taking it.
Now before you go and take the class I’m going to tell you a few things that I found helped my experience.
First is that Treefort offers more than just music. They have a very wide variety of events on hand and they are all ripe for photography. They even have a helpful app that you can use to organize events and shows you might be interested in attending.
Second is to have a good grasp on navigation. I recommend having a compass and one of the maps that Treefort provides which shows all the venues and various places to park. Having a backup navigation system like this was really helpful, especially because when I went my phone wasn’t working and I was unable to use my GPS over the whole trip. And while I found it much easier to walk places, Boise has a pretty good network of rentable scooters if you’ve got a need for speed.
Thirdly, be really on top of your gear, wear comfortable shoes, have earplugs, and if you have a nice “fast” prime lens or two, it’s good to take those with you even if you’re expecting to mostly use a variable zoom lens. You’ll be dealing with a vast variety of distances, and lighting conditions so having more tools to combat those factors is a must. When I went I took two cameras, a film camera and a digital camera, that could swap lenses between them so that’s how I managed having a prime lens and a zoom lens.
My fourth and final tip is to remember to have fun, see if you can’t go on the trip with friends, go to shows and venues that interest you, enjoy the food trucks, and see if you can get exclusive photoshoots with a band you’re interested in. You’re there to learn and grow as an artist, but you’re also there for an experience that will hopefully lead you to do more shows in the future.
